Punta Giradili
Pedra Longa and Punta Giradili
The hike from Pedra Longa to Punta Giradili, passing by Ovile Us Piggius, is a fascinating journey through one of the wildest and most spectacular landscapes along the coast of Baunei. The route winds through towering limestone cliffs, ancient shepherds' trails and breathtaking views over the Mediterranean, combining dramatic scenery with fascinating traces of the traditional pastoral life of the Supramonte.
Our hike begins near Pedra Longa, the impressive limestone monolith rising from the sea and one of the most distinctive landmarks along this stretch of Sardinia's eastern coast.
From here, we follow a trail that gradually leaves the coastline behind and enters the rugged, rocky landscape of the Supramonte. We walk along ancient paths used for generations by local shepherds to travel between their huts and grazing areas, crossing a wild and fascinating environment.
Continuing along the trail, we reach Ovile Us Piggius, a remarkable reminder of the pastoral culture that shaped the Baunei area for centuries. Surrounded by an unspoilt natural landscape, the shepherd's settlement is one of the most evocative stops along our route and offers an opportunity to see traditional structures built mainly from locally available stone and wood.
Leaving the shepherd's settlement behind, we continue towards Punta Giradili. As we gain altitude, the views become increasingly wide and spectacular. Immense limestone cliffs dominate the landscape, while towards the sea our gaze extends over a vast stretch of Sardinia's eastern coastline.
We eventually reach Punta Giradili, one of the most impressive viewpoints of the entire hike. Here, the dramatic vertical cliffs meet the deep blue of the Mediterranean, creating a truly unforgettable landscape.
After a panoramic break, we begin our return journey, once again following the Cengia Giradili trail, one of the most distinctive sections of the hike. The path crosses the limestone mountainside, following natural passages and ancient routes known and used by generations of local shepherds.
Along this section, we can once again admire the immense cliffs of Giradili and the striking contrast between the pale limestone, Mediterranean vegetation and the blue sea far below.
Following the same trail back gives us the opportunity to experience the landscape from a completely different perspective. Step by step, we gradually descend towards the coast until the unmistakable silhouette of Pedra Longa comes back into view.
The complete Pedra Longa – Ovile Us Piggius – Punta Giradili – Cengia Giradili – Pedra Longa route is one of the most rewarding hikes for discovering the extraordinary landscape of Baunei.
More than just a panoramic hike, it is also a journey through the pastoral history of the Supramonte, following trails originally created out of the need to travel through this challenging terrain. Today, these ancient paths still tell the story of the deep connection between generations of local people and the mountains they called home.
Wild nature, towering limestone cliffs, ancient shepherds' settlements and spectacular views over the Mediterranean make this hike an authentic experience that brings together some of the most distinctive features of Baunei and the Supramonte.
