Canyoning in Codula Fuili

    Codula Fuili Canyoning

Codula Fuili is a spectacular karst canyon located in the Supramonte, in the historical region of Ogliastra, on Sardinia’s wild eastern coast. The final section of the canyon reaches the sea directly, opening onto the beautiful beach of Cala Fuili.

The Sardinian word codula refers to a narrow gorge or steep valley. Today, Codula Fuili is a dry canyon, as the water continues its journey underground through the vast network of caves and karst formations hidden beneath the Supramonte.

    Reaching Codula Fuili

Our adventure begins near Cala Fuili, easily reached by following the paved road from Cala Gonone. From here, we start hiking up the southern side of the canyon, initially following the trail towards Cala Luna before turning right at a fork.

The path climbs along a steep and highly scenic slope, offering beautiful views over Cala Gonone and the Gulf of Orosei.

After approximately 45 minutes of hiking, we reach the old Toddeitto shepherd’s hut, a traditional stone structure once used by local shepherds and now restored as a shelter for hikers.

Into the Heart of Codula Fuili

From Toddeitto, a gentle descent takes us to the bed of the Codula. As we continue, the gorge gradually becomes narrower and its towering limestone walls close in around us.

Sunlight struggles to reach the bottom of the canyon, creating an increasingly wild and atmospheric landscape.

Soon we reach our first rappel, an easy descent of approximately 20 metres. From here, we continue through the canyon, walking among massive boulders and ancient holm oaks growing between the impressive limestone walls.

    Rappelling Through the Canyon

The second rappel takes us into the true heart of Codula Fuili and is one of the most spectacular sections of the adventure. During this approximately 22-metre descent, it almost feels as though we are descending into the depths of the earth.

Not far ahead, we reach the third and final rappel, which leads us towards the exit of the canyon.

From here, we walk through lush vegetation and beautiful oleanders, which are particularly impressive when they bloom in spring.

From the Canyon to Cala Fuili Beach

As we approach the beach, we will see numerous climbing walls along the limestone cliffs. Codula Fuili is, in fact, also a true paradise for rock climbers, with routes surrounded by the spectacular scenery of the Gulf of Orosei.

Our canyoning adventure lasts just over half a day and ends on the wonderful beach of Cala Fuili, where we can enjoy a well-deserved break and, conditions permitting, a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean.

Codula Fuili canyoning is a fantastic experience for beginners and anyone looking for an exciting way to discover one of the wildest and most fascinating corners of the Supramonte.
